Graphene-Based Micro-Supercapacitors for On-Chip Energy Storage

Abstract: Micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) are important on-chip micro-power sources for miniaturized integrated electronic devices. Using 2D atomically thin graphene, new designs for thin-film planar MSCs with outstanding performance have become possible, taking full advantage of the atomic layer thicknesses and flat morphology of graphene. In this talk, I will present our recent advances on the reasonable fabrication and construction of high-performance MSCs based on graphene and 2D materials. First, we demonstrate graphene-based flexible and high-power MSCs through micropatterning of methane-plasma or photochemically reduced graphene films, allowing for operations at ultrahigh rate up to 2000 V s‑1. Second, we describe large-area, highly uniform, ultrathin, heteroatom (N, B, S)-doped graphene films for MSCs, providing enhanced volumetric capacitance of 400~600 F cm‑3. Third, we show the universal construction of graphene compact films (polyaniline/polypyrrole nanosheets, activated graphene, thiophene nanosheets, phosphorene, MnO2 nanosheets) for high-energy MSCs, up to 46 mWh cm−3. Finally, sandwich-like planar MSCs with symmetric and asymmetric configuration will be presented. Therefore, these MSCs have great promise as micropower sources for direct integration of future portable, wearable, and implantable microelectronics.

Biography: Zhong-Shuai Wu received his PhD in materials science from Institute for Metal Research, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 2011, supervised by Prof. Hui-Ming Cheng. Then he worked at Max-Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Germany as a postdoctor during 2011-2015. He became a full Professor and group leader of 2D Materials & Energy Devices at Dalian Institute of Chemical Physics, CAS in 2015. He is a recipient of the National Natural Science Award (2nd class, 2017), Liaoning Provincial Science and Technology Award (1st class, 2015), Recruitment Program of Global Expert (1000 Plan), IOP Outstanding Reviewer Award 2016,  Liaoning "BaiQianWan Talents Program" - Qian Talents Level (2016), Energy Storage Materials_Excellent Reviewer Award 2016, "2015 Best Paper" Award in the journal National Science Review (2016), Excellence in Review Award for service to the journal Carbon in 2013/2014, Distinguished Winner of the Carbon Journal Prize (2013), the Prize of Excellent Ph.D. Thesis of CAS (2012), the Special Prize of President Scholarship for Postgraduate Students of CAS (2011). He is a member of National Technical Committee 279 on Nanotechnology of Standardization Administration of China, Member of CIGIU International Standardization Technical Committee, member of Technology Committee for Inner Mongolia Institute of Graphene Materials, member of Engineering Technology Committee for Guangdong Engineering Technology Research Center of Low-Carbon and Advanced Energy Materials (2016). He is currently severing as guest editor of Energy Storage Materials, guest editors and editorial board of Journal of Energy Chemistry, and Chinese Chemical Letters, and corresponding expert (Clean Energy) of journal Engineering. He has been frequently invited as Expert Reviewer or Adjudicative Reviewer for refereeing manuscripts in high-profile peer-reviewed journals, including Chem. Soc. Rev., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Adv. Mater., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed, Energy Environ. Sci., Adv. Energy Mater., Energy Storage Mater., Nano Energy, 2D Materials, Sci. Rep., Small, Chem. Mater., Carbon, npj 2D Materials and Applications, and so on.

His research interest involves graphene and 2D materials for electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices, including supercapacitors, battery, flexible and micro-scale energy storage, and fuel cell. He has published more than 50 articles (IF>10, 33 papers) in Adv. Mater., Nat. Commun., J. Am. Chem. Soc., ACS Nano, Adv. Funct. Mater., Adv. Energy Mater., Nano Energy etc, which have been cited >12000 times, average citations per item is >200 times, H-index=31. 22 papers are ESI highly-cited papers, and his highest cited paper with more than 1400 times has been selected as “Top 10 Highly-Cited Paper in China Over the Past Ten Years (2006-2016)”. Additionally, he has authored 2 book chapters, 19 patents, and presented 30+ Plenary, Keynote, Invited and Oral talks in the international conferences.
